Stop running back to the fridge mid cookout. Grill, prep space, storage and somewhere for people to sit while you work.

What actually goes wrong
A Grill on a Patio Is Not an Outdoor Kitchen
You end up cooking with your back to everyone, setting plates on a chair, and walking inside four times for things you forgot. The party happens in the kitchen while you are stood outside.
An outdoor kitchen fixes the layout, not just the equipment. Counter space either side of the grill, storage for the tools, and seating positioned so you are facing people instead of the fence.

What goes in it
Six Things Worth Planning Before the Grill Goes In
Equipment is the easy part. Where it all sits relative to the door and the seating is what decides whether you use it.
- Grill and Prep RunsCounter on both sides of the grill so there is somewhere to put the food going on and the food coming off.
- Storage and CabinetsWeather rated doors and drawers so tools, charcoal and plates live outside instead of being carried out each time.
- Seating Built InBar height seating along the working side, so you are talking to people while you cook rather than after.
- Pizza Ovens and Side BurnersExtras worth planning for up front, because both need more clearance and counter space than people expect.
- Under a CoverA kitchen under a roof gets used in September and in the rain. One in the open gets used on nice evenings only.
- Lighting and PowerTask lighting over the cooking surface and outlets where you actually need them. Both are easier to run before the counters go in.
How we approach it
We Ask How You Cook Before We Draw Anything
An outdoor kitchen that gets used weekly and one that gets used twice a summer usually cost about the same. The difference is almost always layout: how far it is from the back door, whether there is shade, and whether anyone can sit near you.
- Distance from the kitchen door. The further it is, the fewer trips you will tolerate, and the more storage it needs.
- Which way it faces. Cooking into the afternoon sun with smoke blowing back at you is how a kitchen stops getting used.
- Built for Illinois weather. Materials and finishes that take a freeze rather than an outdoor kitchen designed for Arizona.

The plan
How an Outdoor Kitchen Build Actually Runs
More planning up front than most projects, because the layout decisions are hard to undo afterward.
Talk Through How You Cook
Who is usually out there, what you cook, and where people end up standing. The layout comes out of that conversation.
Design, Permit and Utilities
We draw it, pull the permit, and work out gas, power and any water before the footprint gets poured or framed.
Build the Structure
Frame, counters and cabinetry go in, with any cover or pergola over it built at the same time rather than added later.
Fit Out and Walkthrough
Grill, storage and lighting get fitted, everything gets tested, and we walk it with you before we leave.
Cook Outside This Summer. Pay Over Time.
Outdoor kitchens are usually the project that gets talked about for three years. 0% financing is often what turns it into a project that actually gets built.

Common questions
Outdoor Kitchen Questions from Illinois Valley Homeowners
How much does an outdoor kitchen cost?
It spreads wider than almost anything else we build, because the equipment you choose can cost more than the structure around it. We price the build and the appliances separately so you can see which is which.
Can it go on my existing patio or deck?
Often yes. A concrete patio usually takes it directly. A deck needs the framing checked first, because counters and appliances add real weight.
Do I need gas and water run out there?
Gas if you want a built in grill rather than a propane bottle. Water is optional and adds cost, since the line has to be drained before winter here.
Does it need a cover?
Not required, but it changes how often you use it. A kitchen under a roof works in September and in light rain. An open one is a nice evening thing.
What happens in winter?
Appliances get covered, any water line gets drained, and the structure stays put. We build with materials that take a freeze.
Can you build a pizza oven in?
Yes. It needs more clearance and counter space than people expect, so it is worth deciding early rather than adding later.
