Six Deck Mistakes We See Every Season

Matthew put these on video after one too many homeowners called us to fix someone else’s work.

  • Hiring someone who is not licensedA licensed contractor understands building codes and is legally allowed to work in your city. No license means no accountability, and the city can shut the job down halfway through for a permit that was never pulled.
  • Not checking insurance and bondingInsurance protects you if something goes wrong on your property. Bonding protects your money if the crew walks off the job. Ask to see proof of both. If the answer gets vague, keep calling.
  • Reading the star rating instead of the reviewsLook past the number and read the comments. You want patterns of communication, cleanliness and showing up on time, not a wall of excuses about missed calls and deposits.
  • Taking the word composite at face valueOff brand composite warps in the sun and turns a new deck into a tripping hazard. Ask what brand is going down and whether it carries a manufacturer warranty.
  • Accepting a verbal warrantyIf anything goes wrong, I will take care of it means nothing once the gate will not close. Get the craftsmanship warranty and the manufacturer warranty in writing before you sign.
  • Letting the cheapest bid decideAn underbid job gets made up somewhere: nails instead of screws, cheaper boards, or a call halfway through asking for more money. You end up holding a half finished deck.

The risk of the wrong crew

You Want a Deck. Not a Headache

Building a deck is a big investment and most homeowners do it once. Too many people in LaSalle have learned the hard way what happens when they hire the cheapest bid. Deadlines get pushed. Materials show up late. Communication stops.

  • You should not have to follow up five times to get a straight answer on your start date.
  • You should not have to wonder if it is safe. Uneven boards and loose railings are a code problem, not a cosmetic one.
  • You should not be left guessing whether the company will come back if something moves.

Our expert process

From First Sketch to the Last Board Screwed Down

Four stages, and you know where your build sits at every one of them. No chasing, no guessing at the start date.

Walk the Yard and Price the Build

We look at the footprint, the height off grade, where the stairs land and where the sun actually hits in the afternoon. You get a written number before we leave.

Design, Permit and Footings

We draw the plan, pull the village permit and set footings below the frost line so an Illinois winter does not lift your deck out of the ground.

Frame, Deck and Rail

The frame goes up, then the boards, then the railing and stairs. You hear from us every day the crew is on your property.

Final Walkthrough and Warranty

We walk the finished deck with you, check every rail and stair, and hand over the manufacturer and craftsmanship warranties in writing.

Build Your Deck Now. Pay Over Time.

0% financing means the deck gets built this season instead of next. Find out what you qualify for, then we size the build to a payment that fits.

Common questions

Deck Questions from LaSalle and Peru Homeowners

Composite or wood, which should I pick?

Composite costs more up front and almost nothing after. Wood costs less to build and asks for a stain or seal every few years. If you want to spend weekends on the deck rather than maintaining it, go composite.

How much does a deck cost in LaSalle or Peru?

It comes down to square footage, height off grade, how many stairs you need and the material. A ground level wood deck and a raised composite deck with a railing system are very different numbers. We measure, then give you one in writing.

Do I need a permit for a deck?

Usually yes, and we pull it. We also set footings below the frost line so the structure does not shift when the ground freezes and thaws.

How long does a deck take to build?

Most residential decks are framed and finished within a week on site once the permit is in hand, depending on size and weather.

Can you build over an existing patio or around a pool?

Yes. We build poolside decks, multi level layouts and wraparounds, and we have done both above ground pool surrounds and stone walk transitions.

Do you offer financing on decks?

Yes. 0% financing is available on deck projects, and you can check what you qualify for before committing to anything.
